Erickson, Shirley (nee Nelson) Shirley left for Heaven at 8:40 am on Friday, March 9th, 2012.

No one has captured Shirley's essence any better than her new "best friend" Mary Jo Franske. She is a volunteer in a senior program sponsored by Lutheran Brotherhood and UCare. "Shirley looked at the world as an expectant child, awaiting some sort of miracle, some sort of party, some sort of magic to happen spontaneously. The bell around her neck, the bobbing head of curls, the way she greeted people, caused us to expect wonderful things as well. Having not known Shirley before her stroke, I can only assume that she was a gregarious child, a lively, fun teen, a flirtatious date, a loving wife, a warm and welcoming entertainer, a generous and loyal friend, and a creative and indulgent mother.

I can only expect that she shopped like a diva, cooked like Paula, entertained like Martha and leapt into new projects like Oprah. She loved watching snowfalls. She loved connecting people with one another. She loved Kings in the Corner, and before that, Bridge. She loved Lefsa and casseroles and old movies.

She loved anything Swedish, anything a bit unusual, anything with sugar. She kept a bag of peanut and M's in the bottom of her purse, just in case. Shirley's favorite word was Wow-and that is my best description of Shirley was a 1947 graduate of Washburn High School. She graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1951 as an English Education major and taught high school in Spooner, Wisconsin for one year before her marriage to Roy in December 1951. Shirley and Roy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on December 27, last year.

Shirley had a number of interests and several great loves: Gourmet cooking; Art needlework--a field in which she won national awards and served as an expert instructor; Bridge--especially duplicate. She had served on the board of the Women's Christian Association for many years and served as President of Dunwoody Hall as well. A private memorial service is planned. Memorials to the Minnesota Stroke Association are requested in lieu of flowers. Fritts, Michael Ray Passed away on March 10, 2012 with his wife and daughter at his side.
