PAGE B4 10 2002 MANKATO, MINN. Radio personality and former KTOE-AM general manager Bill Smith died Sunday after a long battle with cancer. He was 78. Smith joined KTOE Radio when it started in 1950 under founder Don Linder. Smith served as sales manager, announcer and sports broadcaster.

He was later named general manager and served in that position for 30 years. After stepping down, he was a sales consultant and frequent host of Minnesota Twins bus trips. He is survived by his wife, Ev, and their four daughters and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were pending. Fuller guided the largest newsgath- ering organization into an age of stories and pictures transmitted by satellite instead of telephone and teletype. Under his leadership, AP added more overseas bureaus, expanded the range of live broadcast news and took the first steps toward diversifying its sources of income. When he took the helm in 1976, AP served newspapers with just over 70 percent of the daily circulation. By the time he retired, the AP had reached 90 percent. After his retirement, he served for 10 years on the board of directors of Gannett.

He was succeeded at the AP by Louis D. Boccardi. Ira (Bill) Cole, 78, a dean at Northwestern journalism school for nearly 30 years who was known for his innovative approach to teaching, died Friday at Waveny Care Center in New Canaan, Conn. He had disease. He was dean of Medill School of Journalism from 1957 to 1984 and advocated for journalism students to work in professional news organizations as part of their course work.

Cole began a program in 1958 for graduate students to work for the City News Bureau in Chicago; he later established the bureau in Washington, where students cover the capital for newspapers. ideas remain at the core of the Medill program said Roger Boye, assistant dean at Medill. Arthur Schoenberg, 81, who in 1986 became the oldest person in the nation to receive a heart transplant, died May 17. He had fought kidney failure, cancer and a stroke. Schoenberg was 66 when, in 1986, he received the heart of a 23-year-old man who had died in a motorcycle crash. At the time, the recommended cutoff point for transplants was 55, and Schoenberg had been turned down once for a donor heart. But as his condition worsened, a screening committee at the University of California, Los Angeles, Heart Transplant Program reconsidered his case.

Barbara Preiskel, 77, a lawyer who fought to break down racial barriers in entertainment law, died Tuesday of leukemia. In 1947, Preiskel became the second black woman to graduate from Yale Law School. From 1959 to 1983, she was a lawyer and executive with the Motion Picture Association of America, where she aided in a legal battle over state and local censorship laws, many of which tried to censor depictions of interracial relationships. Preiskel served on numerous corporate and charity boards, most recently the Sept. 11 Fund, and a trustee of Yale, Wellesley and Tougaloo College in Mississippi.

Signe Hasso, a Swedish actress whose decades- long stage and film career included nearly two dozen Hollywood movies such as Can died Friday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Her age was variously reported as 86 and 91. Hasso, who held dual Swedish and U.S. citizenship, is one of a few Swedish-born performers with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Martin Aronstein, 65, a five-time Tony Award nominee for theatrical design who was known for his groundbreaking use of lights, died May 3 of heart failure.

He designed more than 100 Broadway plays over his career, starting with Milk Train Stop Here in 1963. Other credits included and It Again, Shirley Greitzer, 76, a pianist and the former director of placement at the Juilliard School, died May 29. She was the director of placement at Juilliard for nearly 10 years, beginning in 1990. During her tenure, she arranged for students to perform in lunchtime concert series throughout the city, in part to give them experience performing in front of live audiences. She insisted that they be paid.

Thomas Brown, 75, who turned an early infatuation with the transistor into a multibillion-dollar electronics powerhouse, died of lung cancer on Thursday in Tucson, Ariz. Brown and friend Page Burr launched Burr- Brown Corp. in 1956 in Tucson garage for $50,000. Burr-Brown was acquired by Texas Instruments in August 2000 in a stock deal valued at $7.6 billion.
