The Field's name, Target executives claimed, generates far more resonance with shoppers worldwide than the Dayton's moniker, especially important as the retailer prepares to launch an online gift registry later this year. And in retail these days, a strong brand name rules. News of the change rekindled ru By Janet Moore Star Tribune Staff Writer It all came down to an unsentimental business decision.

In its bid to conquer the Internet with a unified name, Minneapolis-based Target Corp. announced Friday that it would change the name of its Dayton's and Hudson's depart Why is the name changing? The company believes the Marshall Field's name is better known nationally and can help expand its online presence. No specific date for the change has been set What is Marshall Field's Marshall Field's was founded in 1852 in Chicago, where 16 of its 24 stores are located. The chain was acquired by Dayton Hudson Corp. (now known as Target Corp.) in 1990.

The stores offer the same upscale merchandise as Dayton's. What about charge Stillwater bridge plan suspended State officials cite acrimony, lack of money for old span By Mike Kaszuba and Dan Wascoe Jr. Star Tribune Staff Writers Minnesota and Wisconsin transportation officials Friday indefinitely suspended plans to build a long-debated new bridge over the St. Croix River at Stillwater, saying it is "simply not prudent" to continue spending tax money on a project over which there is so much disagreement.

"This is a sad day for everyone," said Elwyn Tinklenberg, Minnesota's transportation commissioner. "There are no clear indications that this project is able to move forward. We have done everything we can to encourage all the parties to reach an agreement." Tinklenberg's announcement, though not unexpected, was a major setback for an array of business and development interests that for years have pushed to replace Stillwater's two-lane, 1931 lift bridge. Teen wins custody of baby she left in garbage can By David Chanen Star Tribune Staff Writer A teenage mother who placed her newborn daughter in a garbage can in Minneapolis last winter will regain custody of the girl, a judge ruled Friday.

In a rare move, Hennepin County Juvenile Court Judge Herbert Lefler denied a petition filed by child protection officials to terminate the mother's parental rights. The mother, now 16, has had an appropriate and loving relationship with her daughter since the birth and hasn't done anything to indicate that the infant's future well-being is in jeopardy, the ruling said. The baby will remain in foster care until the county develops a plan to reunite her with her mother. What else is changing? The two Dayton's Home Stores (near Southdale and Rosedale) will change to Marshall Field's Home Stores. The division's 21 Hudson's stores in Michigan will also be renamed Marshall Field's. No changes are 0 expected in Target Cor poration's two other divisions: Mervyn's California (267 stores in 14 states) and Target Stores (977 stores in 46 states). A part of Minnesota culture dies 1917 People think of Dayton's as much more than a department store: It's a fainily friend. Hi and I was getting things from there 70 years ago." Ann Barkelew, former spokeswoman for Dayton Hudson Corp. (now Target agreed that the decision to remake Dayton's as Marshall Field's, a name as associated with Chicago as Dayton's is with Minnesota, affects more than the store. In a self-aware place that treasures its icons, the hardheaded business decision struck at the culture's soft heart i "I think it shows that the world is getting smaller," said George Pills-bury, scion of another of the legendary Minnesota families that, like the Daytons, built the Twin Cities in the 20th century.
