The opening ranked 9th among the top 10 all-time weekends. Universal Studios President Ron Meyer said he had expected a debut closer to $30 million for the horror and special-effects film starring Brendan Fraser.

The remake was Universal's third-largest opening, exceeded only by "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" ($90.2 million) and "Jurassic Park" ($47 million). Thanks to a startling number of computer-generated images, you almost feel like you're watching DreamWorks' animated "The Prince of Egypt." But this $60 million "Mummy" still embraces the melodramatic, overacted, shoestring-budgeted origins of the original mummy movies. Here's a peek inside the tomb of some of our favorite mummified memories: "The Mummy" (1932): Although Freund's debut picture was hardly the first appearance of a movie mummy (they actually date as far back as 1901's "The Haunted Curiosity his vision of Egypt's ancient dead became the icon to which future versions were compared. Boris Karloff is the regenerated priest Imhotep, who eventually sheds his bandages and becomes the menacingly pale Ardeth Bey.

"The Mummy's Hand" (1940): Not really a sequel to Freund's film, even though it uses almost 10 minutes of the picture as flashback footage. This time, the vengeful undead priest is called Kharis (Tom Tyler). The new "Mummy" also borrows from this story of an ancient brotherhood protecting the tomb of Princess Ananka. Dick Foran and Wallace Ford do a kind of Abbott-and-Costello routine as leaders of the expedition. "The Mummy's Tomb" (1942): Kharis (Lon Chaney Jr.) Weekend Avg.

"The Mummy" (1959): England's Hammer Studios revived the mummy legend with this remake, starring Christopher Lee as the cursed Kharis. Peter Cushing desecrates the tomb of Princess Ananka, invoking the mummy's wrath. Several of the more stylish elements of this version also wound up in the new movie.

"The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb" (1964): The mummy is Ra-Antef (Dickie Owen) this time, an attraction brought to Victorian England only to go on an obligatory killing spree. "The Mummy's Curse" (1944): The end of the Kharis series (for Universal) has both mummies unearthed from the swamp by construction crews. There's so much flashback footage from previous "Mummy" movies, this hardly even counts as a new effort.

This Ananka, Virginia Christine, went on to play Mrs. Olsen in the Folgers commercials. "Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy" (1955): As with most of the Bud and Lou monster comedies, this spelled the end for Universal's mummy outings.
