The opening ranked 9th among the top 10 all-time weekends. Universal Studios President Ron Meyer said he had expected a debut closer to $30 million for the horror and special-effects film starring Brendan Fraser.

The remake was Universal's third-largest opening, exceeded only by "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" ($90.2 million) and "Jurassic Park" ($47 million). But this $60 million "Mummy" still embraces the melodramatic, overacted, shoestring-budgeted origins of the original mummy movies.
