Obituaries PAGE B6 STAR TRIBUNE 1 THURSDAY, JULY 1 1999 Hilding (Ing) Nelson, ex-chairman of brokerage firm, dies Also noted Catholicos Garegln 66, the leader of the Armenian Apostolic Church, died there Tuesday of larynx cancer. Earlier this year, the Armenian church canceled a trip by Pope John Paul to Armenia because of the Catholicos failing health. The Vatican had scheduled a July papal visit to Armenia as part of John Paul's efforts to improve relations with other Christian denominations. Garegin was elected Catholicos in April 1995, succeeding Vazgen who had held the post for 40 years. By Neal St Anthony Star Tribune Staff Writer Hilding (Ing) Nelson, 61, an entrepreneur who associates say cared more about his relationships with people and nature than the next buck, died Sunday night of a heart attack.

"He was a wonderful man, the antithesis of some of what you see in business today," said Frank Taylor, a Minneapolis lawyer. "He was straight-on honest. If he gave you his word, you had something. He valued people because they were interesting. He didn't do things for money or power." A fitness buff who walked often, Nelson was stricken last fall with a racing heart on an Iowa hunting trip with Taylor.

Bypass surgery followed at University of Iowa hospitals. Nelson was pronounced fit in April and was leading an active life when he died. The St. Peter, native earned physics and economics degrees from Gustavus Adolphus College. He is credited with creating or turning around an electronics-component firm, the predecessor company to what is now Pet Food Warehouse, and an auto dealership.

He also was an investor for many years in Knnard Investments, parent of the Minne apolis-based securities firm. He oversaw the company as chairman during a turbulent 1995-98 period, before retiring last year. "He kept this place alive in the face of enormous pressures," Chief Executive Bill Farley said last year. Nelson was publicity shy and rarely appeared in the press. He backed away from everyday business interests last year, about a decade after he had planned, to spend time reading, enjoying friends and hiking some of the great forests and mountain ranges of the Americas.

"He was a balanced man," said Steve Berghs, an executive at U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray, who shared books and lunches with Nelson over the years. "We had long, wonderful conversations about a lot of things. He was a businessman and a family man, and he had varied interests. It was a passion of his to know different people." Nelson, a Minneapolis resident, was preceded in death by a son, Steven Wayne.

He is survived by his wife, Ian; daughter, Lonnie, of California; his mother; two grandchildren; two sisters; and a brother. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, 50th and KnoxAv. Minneapolis. There will be a visitation one hour before the service.

Hilding (Ing) Nelson retired from Klnnard Investments last year. -Til Funeral Notices And related classifications; To place a paid classified notice call 673-4130; Fax 612-673-4884 242 242 242 242 242 242 242 242 242 Obituaries SFunersli delos Reyes 1 ObftuirlNlFijMrtis Sabeti-Oseid Michael age 34, res. Thomas. She worked for Destron-Fearing Co. of S. St. Paul.

Sweet and angelic, Jennifer touched the lives of everyone she met. She has so many loving friends, so talented 8 writer, so quick of wit and full of humor. She faced her chronic illness of lupus with such grace and dignity that only those closest to her knew of her challenges. Thoughtfulness best describes the essence of her spirit. An angel on earth, it is now time for Jenna to dance and play with angels in heaven, secure and at eternal peace in the hands of the Lord to whom she returned on June 28, 1999.

Her passage was swift, and that suddenness leaves us trying to comprehend why? We wish to celebrate her inspirational life which taught us to live each day to the fullest, searching for the best it has to offer. Our hearts are broken, but your spirit helps to soothe the searing, piercing pain which clouds our limited ability to comprehend. You live forever with God in our Mom.
