Isabelle Fijalkowski scored 14 points and had a game-high nine rebounds, and Merlakia Jones had 12 points and Rushia Brown 10 for Cleveland. ABL signs deal with Fox Sports Net The ABL completed its television deals for the upcoming season and only half as many games will be nationally televised. The league agreed Monday to show up to 16 of its games on Fox Sports Net, down from 24 last season. Earlier this month, the league signed a deal with CBS to air two games of the championship series the first ABL games to be shown on broadcast television. From News Services Frank Layden's WNBA coaching debut was a success Monday night as LaTonya Johnson scored 15 points and the Utah Starzz beat the Phoenix Mercury 90-80 in Salt Lake City.

Layden was named the Starzz's head coach earlier in the day, replacing the fired Denise Taylor. The longtime Utah Jazz coach had been away from the bench for nearly a decade, but he already had the lowly Starzz (7-13) playing like a different team. Utah jumped to a 65-51 lead midway through the second half, but instead of executing their customary fold down the stretch, the Starzz held off a late rally and gained only their 14th victory in nearly two seasons. Phoenix coach Cheryl Miller was ejected with 13:11 left in the game after two quick technicals. The Mercury has lost three consecutive games and four of its past five.

Jennifer Gillom led Phoenix with 31 points, and Michelle Griffiths came off the bench to score 15. Johnson led five Starzz in double figures. Kim Williams and Olympia Scott had 14 points apiece, and Chantel Tremetiere scored 13. Layden, who stepped down from the Jazz in November 1988 after parts of eight seasons as coach, received a standing ovation from the crowd of 8,624 when his name was announced. Before the game, Layden said: "There's been a void in my life since I left coaching.

I miss the competitive spirit." Layden will retain his position as president of the Jazz, but he stressed that his new job was not temporary. "This is not an interim position," Layden said. "This is a position I plan to hold for a long time to come." Val Ackerman WNBAromCl Ad campaign is part of plan to boost WNBA ticket sales here According to Roger Griffith, Timberwolves chief financial officer, Minnesota's WNBA team will be in jeopardy if the deadline isn't met. But no one in Minnesota or at WNBA headquarters in New York is making alternative plans. Minnesota is still going ahead with the process of hiring a head coach, and New York is still searching for a name that fits with the Timber-wolves logo and colors.

The WNBA is in place to give women basketball players professional opportunities, but it's also a business. "The NBA is not a feminist institution," said Mariah Burton Nelson, author of "Embracing Victory" and other books about women's sports. "It's a business proposition. But along the way, they are supporting women and girls and men who desperately want social roles to change." And it's an especially secure business proposition: Arenas, employees and fans are already in place. The 10 teams in the WNBA draw an average of 10,209 fans per game, from the Sacramento Mon-archs' average of 6,691 to the Washington Mystics' average of 15,607.

Games reach 2.5 million TVs per week. "I love to say it took the NBA 29 seasons to hit that 10,000 mark," Ackerman said. "So we're very happy to be ahead of the curve." Associated Press The Utah Starzz on Monday fired coach Denise Taylor, who was 13-34 overall and 6-13 this season, and replaced her with former Utah Jazz coach Frank Layden. Lakeville 3 Still, teams face challenges in selling tickets. Many of the best basketball players in the country play for the American Basketball League. The WNBA also raised the number of season tickets that expansion teams have to sell by 2,000 tickets to 5,000, 700 more than the league average. The price of season tickets for the Minnesota expansion team hasn't been decided yet; fans put down $50 deposits to hold their seats.

Because ticket sales are so low, Griffith, who is heading the effort to bring a WNBA team to Minnesota, said the Timberwolves decided to spend the bulk of the year's advertising money before Sept. 1. Local TV ads are already running, and print ads will hit newspapers, magazines and bus billboards next week. Orlando, however, expects to meet the goal without spending any money on advertising. In the coming months, Twin Citians will see firsthand how WNBA advertising targets families, offering the sport as an uncorrupt, family-oriented game.

"We're bringing in a different sort of audience," Ackerman said. "It's very different from NBA crowds." Opposite, in fact, in terms of gender: Women make up about 70 percent of an average WNBA audience. "There's a cultural phenomenon going on here that I'm very excited about," said Nelson, who played professional basketball for the Women's Basketball League in the early 1980s and now holds season tickets to the Mystics. "There's a community coming together to celebrate female athletes," Nelson said. "They're totally loyal and excited.

At games they stand and dance and laugh. They're cheering for women, and this is new." There is no striking reason why the Twin Cities isn't ready for such a "cultural phenomenon." The WNBA is betting the Twin Cities will be ready with the help of a few advertising dollars.
