Associated with daytime dramatics doing serial radio work on NBC and CBS in Chicago, where she was also business manager and acted for the Radio Theatre Guild. Served as President of the Zeta Phi Eta National Professional Speech Society and President of the Juniors of the Women's Club. Wippermann, M.D., a resident of Edina for forty years, born in Mpls. died He earned his B.S.

Degree at the University of Wisconsin and his M.D. at the of Minnesota. He was in private practice in Mpis for 52 years as a Board certified ophthalmologist. During his career, Fred was a consultant for the Mpis Society of the Blind-Low Vision Unit; an Associate Clinical Protessor, of M. Dept of Ophthalmology, and an ophthalmological consultant for the state of Minnesota.

Fred served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a flight surgeon from 1941 to 1946. In memory of his son, Brian, Fred established the youth gun safety program in Edina. With the help of the Edina Optimist Club, the Edina Park Board, and generous private donations, The Brian Wippermann Memorial Indoor and Outdoor Gun and Pistol Range was built at Braemar to promote youth gun safety through classroom education and hands experience. Prior to its demolition, this facility was used by 47,000 participants from 1962 to 1995 and 3,970 students completed the Edina Firearm Safety Program.

In 1983, Fred received an award for distinguished service to the Edina Community. Fred particularly enjoyed his friends in The Edina Optimist Club, the American Legion Post The Question Club, the Edina Country Club and Friendship Village. Snow skiing with the Ski M.D. group, traveling, dancing and golf were favorite pastimes. Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Sylvia; daughter, Stephanie Ann; son, Frederic Brian.

Survived by his cherished wife, Louise Marie; son, Frederic Alan, Dallas, TX: daughter. Bradshaw 3131 Minnehaha Avenue 612-724-3621 242 Obituaries Funerals Menk Louis Wilson Menk, retired Chairman and CEO of Burlington Northern died November 23, 1999 in Carefree, AZ, following a short illness associated with cancer. He was born April 8, 1918 in Englewood, CO, the oldest child of Louis A. and Daisy D.

(Frantz) Menk. Following in his father's footsteps, he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a messenger and telegrapher from 1937 to 1940. He joined the St. Louis-San Francisco Railways in 1940 as a telegrapher and rose through the ranks to become President of the Frisco in 1962, the then-youngest president in American railroading history. He was subsequently named Chairman and CEO.

In 1965, Mr. Menk accepted an invitation to lead Chicago, Burlington Quincy Railroad Co. He then became President of the Northern Pacific Railway Company, a parent of the Burlington. For the next four years, he not only ran the Northern Pacific, but also participated in the executive group working on a merger of the Northern Pacitic and Great Northern and their affiliated railways. In 1970, the merger took place, resulting in the creation of Burlington Northern, Inc.

with Lou Menk as President and Chief Operating Officer. He was Chairman and CEO of Burlington Northern from 1971 to 1978 and then Chairman until his retirement in 1981. Lou Menk was Chairman and CEO of International Harvester in 1982. He served as Chairman in 1982-1983, then Director of International Navistar until 1990. He served as Chairman and Director of Black Mountain Gas Company from 1992 to 1999; Director ASARCO, 1973-1990: Director General Mills, 1967-1986; Director Stephens, 1978- 1986; Director, Beverly Enterprises, 1989-1997: and Director Amtrak, 1971- 1974.

He was also a Director of First Chicago Corporation, Minnesota Mutual Life Insurance, and the Phoenix Symphony. He was a graduate of the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program (1953) and The Transportation Center at Northwestern University (1959). Lou Menk was a generous benefactor to many causes and organizations. Among the groups that benefited from his generosity were Boy Scouts of America, Mayo Clinic, University of Arizona Heart Center, Heard Museum, Yellowstone Art Museum. Crisis Nursery of Phoenix, and Phoenix Symphony.

He also freely gave his time and skills to organizations that serve industry and society. He was Life Trustee of the Heard Museum; Director Emeritus of Denver University; member of the Council of Emeritus Advisors, College of Business, University of Arizona; and member of The Business Council. Lou Menk's achievements and generosity have long been recognized. He received honorary LL.D. degrees from Drury College (1965), Denver University (1966), and Monmouth College (1967).
