4Bw Monday July 131992Star Tribune Obituaries Public meetings Sidney Zeitlin, principal flutist for 21 years, dies Sidney Zeitlin, who was principal flute of the Minnesota Orchestra from 1969 to 1990, died late Saturday of complications of a heart transplant. Zeitlin, 57, had received a heart transplant at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis on Memorial Day. Flutist Elaine Eagle, a longtime friend and colleague of Zeitlin, described him as "a great flute player and a great character. He was a loyal friend to the end." Born on March 14, 1935, in Philadelphia, Zeitlin moved with his family to Los Angeles in the late 1930s. As a high school sophomore he won a PTA scholarship to study flute and later studied with Roger Stevens, flutist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

He received a scholarship to the Music Academy of the West, where he later taught. flutist. The couple later divorced. Eagle and Zeitlin both taught flute at the University of Minnesota and played together in a number of orchestras. "We also had cabins at the same lake.

We had sort of a flute colony there," she said. Zeitlin's daughters, Lea and Sarah, described him as "a beloved father, outstanding musician and brave man." Zeitlin is survived by his daughters; his brother, Leonard Zeitlin; and his mother, Lillian Zeitlin. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Orchestra Hall. came a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1955. He was drafted into the Army in 1957 and served as principal flute of the 7th Army Symphony in Europe. After a brief return to the Los Angeles Philharmonic, he became principal flute of the Seattle Symphony, a position he held from 1961 to 1968. He won the audition for principal flute of the Minnesota Orchestra in 1969. Zeitlin's last performances with the orchestra were during Viennese Som-merfest in 1990.

His heart condition forced him into disability. Eagle recalled meeting Zeitlin in the late 1960s at a party he threw for flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal, who was appearing with the orchestra. "I think Sid invited every flutist in the Twin Cities," she said. Rochester, Minn. Harold Nilsen; was Falcon Heights mayor Harold C. Nilsen, 83, former City Council member and mayor of Falcon Heights, died of. complications from a stroke Sunday at Lyngblom-sten Health Care Facility in St. Paul.

In the late 1950s, he was a City Council member and served several terms as mayor. "He really wanted to do what was best for the village," said his son, Harold, of St. Paul. Nilsen, of Falcon Heights, was bora in Minneapolis and graduated from the old Wilson High School in St. Paul.

He earned a bachelor's degree in forestry from the University of Minnesota and was in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Minnesota and was an accountant for Harvest States Cooperatives office in Falcon Heights. He retired in 1973. Besides his son, he is survived by a sister, Louella Wood, of St. Paul.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Roseville Memorial Chapel, 2245 Hamline Av. Roseville. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the chapel.

Zeitlin also played with orchestras In Los Angeles and Seattle. After graduating from the University of Southern California, Zeitlin be Paul D. Lund, 76; owned bindery in Minneapolis nifred; a daughter, Paula Gleeson, of St. Paul; sons Peter and James, both of Minneapolis, and a sister, Lorraine Christensen, of Osprey, Fla. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m.

Wednesday at the chapel at Fort Snelling. Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of Minnesota. Paul D. Lund, 76, owner of Lund Bindery in Minneapolis, died of lung cancer Sunday at the Minneapolis Veterans Medical Center. Lund, of Edina, worked at Geographical Publishing in Chicago and Jensen Printing in Minneapolis before starting Lund Bindery in southeast Minneapolis in 1954.

The 20-em-ployee business specialized in Bibles and educational books. Lund Bindery was one of the first to use an automated perfect binding press. The business moved several times before being sold in 1970. Lund moved to Dillon, and spent the rest of his retirement pursuing his lifelong passions, fly fishing and hunting in the mountains. He returned to Edina for health reasons in 1988.

Lund was born in Eau Claire, and graduated from North High School in Minneapolis. He attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, on a writing scholarship and was in the Army in the South Pacific during World War II.
