Minneapolis Star -PrT iew 2D 26, 1979 Film rates of fun garland for rafts Don Morrison "Movie, Movie" is an absolutely delectable movie, a double-wham- my spoor on the old movie-type movies of 40 years ago. It carries tj off this risky assignment with such bouncing style that you are hugging yourself with glee at every hokey scene and every luscious line of dopey dialogue. It amounts to a paste-up of specimens from 1930s Warner Brothers movies not the actual footage, but adroitly skewed museum-replicas of the ideas, attitudes, characters, stories and settings of that studio-factory's output, which kept myriad Depression-era filmgoers happily entertained. In the spirit of the jest, it's even a double-feature embracing two somewhat abbreviated but com- plete movies "Dynamite Hands," a typical fable about a hopeful young law student of poor immigrant parents who goes into the prizefight game to get bis sister an eye operation, and "Baxter's Beauties of 1933," an equally typical (and sappy) musical in which hopeful young talents save a Broadway show at the last minute and are catapulted to instant stardom. "Movie, Movie" puts the same actors in both totally different flicks, just as the old studio routed a stable of contract stars through whatever pictures were coming off its assembly line.

A fine bunch are on hand for this one: George C. Scott, Eli Wallach, Trish Van Devere, Barbara Harris, Red Buttons and Art Carnev in assorted less comedy, The Wrong Box" in producing a gem of silver-screen pastiche that precisely catches every period tone of voice and gives it an extra quaver or gladsome lilt. Virtually every line is funny on several levels what it actually says, what a 1930s scriptwriter thought audiences wanted to hear, and the way it sounds now that connotations and expectations have changed. A very minor example opens "Dynamite Hands." Carney is a doctor examining the eyes of the boxer's sister. He straightens up and says, "She can get dressed now" as the camera backs off to reveal that the girl Is in her slip.

For an eye examination? But. her mother, Mama Popchik, is In the office with her; the patient is quite decently clad, and It is wholly Innocent. But it is a vaguely racy joke for the 1930s that Is unaccountably funny in 1979 because it is so innocent, and so slyly out of place in a serious 1930s scene. This kind of double-layered wit darts through every action and utterance as the stories' stock characters pursue their celluloid destinies. Scott is particularly magnificent as the stalwart "Gloves" Malloy, an honest, grizzled ex-champ trying to save young Joey Popchlk's ring career from sinister gangster influences, and as the debonair "Spats" Baxter, legendary Broadway showman who wants to put on one more hit show before a hidden illness strikes him down.

Scott and the others add to our comic pleasure by playing it straight: no smarmy hint of "Hey, folks, look at us big-name stars being hokey!" Some of the satire has marvel-ously broad effects (Baxter's bitchy lady star has a theater dressing room that is an Art Deco monstrosity in glaring white and as big as the Waldorf lobby), but most of the delicious humor is that found in old family snapshots: we laugh at the ridiculous old fashions and all the life attitudes they imply, but we aren't jeering at the lovably familiar people themselves. is Or Art Carney lead or character roles, plus some shiny-bright newcomers adding fairyland optimism to it all. Now, then, this kind of project is as perilous as a bomb-disposal detail in Belfast. Hollywood's prior efforts to make fun of old movie styles tend to be self-conscious, ham-fisted failures of satire too literal or silly to be fun. They have lacked real affection for their subjects and seemed to fear we wouldn't spot the amusing bunkum in old movies although audiences at the time were perfectly capable of doing so and just enjoyed its transitory diversions.

Stanley Donen, who produced and directed "Movie, Movie," doesn't have to tear an antique to pieces to prove it is flimsy, when Mel Brooks parodies movie cliches, as in "Blazing Saddles," he tries to upstage their built-in humor with his own hip clowning. Donen, a Hollywood veteran who made "Singin' in the Rain," "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and 26 other vintage bottlings, knows how the old movies worked and why they were appealing even if ridiculous. I ft comic sense to achieve just the right degree of straight-faced exaggeration that retains the original seriousness, but enlarges the hilarious implausibility of these beamish fables. Larry Gelbart's screenplay (with Sheldon Keller) is a model of its kind. He again demonstrates a gift for outrageous sophistication-seen in his TV "M'AS'H" series, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" and that price Because this is a spoof, not worshipful history, he uses his knowledge and an exquisitely finetuned Red Buttons Rebbecca York, George C.
