One surprise, although perhaps It shouldn't have been, Is Beatty's brilliant showing as The Compleat Moviemaker. He has always striven to be more than just a pretty face: He produced "Bonnie and Clyde." He wrote "Shampoo." He codlrected himself In "Heaven Can Wait" This time he produced, he directed and he wrote the script in collaboration with an English playwright, Trevor Griffiths. And In those three functions he managed to create the most satlsfyingly dashing romantic role of the decade for Warren Beatty, actor.

Not to mention plunging Diane Keaton into the challenge of coping with the neuroses of a sort of epic, pre-World War I Annie Hall. What's so exciting about "Reds" is the sure-handed way Beatty has thrown together the stuff of documentaries with a story that seems like a historical romantic novel, and made them work so well together. The movie's milieu is politics, but Its game Is romance. "Reds" tells the story of John Reed and Louise Bryant, free-wheeling, early-century live-together lovers who eventually became man and wife. Beatty's Reed comes on at first like one of the original radical chic, more than half a century before the phrase was coined.

A Harvard graduate from an affluent family in Portland, Reed was a Journalist who covered Pancho Villa in Mexico and developed an interest in radical causes. He wrote for The Masses, idolized the Wobblles, wrote and spoke against VS. entry Into the war in Europe and lived in Greenwich Village, hanging out with the left-leaning artists and thinkers of the time. Keaton's Bryant Is at first a bit of a pain, and a bit In pain, beset by artistic urges that seem clear enough tension. to her, but that she can't articulate to the satisfaction of her dentist husband, a fellow striving to be one of Portland's pillars.

After Reed and Bryant meet in Portland, and strike sparks, It's not long before she accepts his Invitation to bring her sexual and literary urges east, and they begin sharing the Greenwich Village life: Turbulently. They fight because Louise's own writing Isn't ing well and she feels put down by John's intense crowd. They argue because John, more and more an advocate and organizer in revolutionary causes, spends so much time traveling. For a time they hang out In Provtncetown, and Louise tries acting In an early Eugene O'Neill play. Later Louise has an affair, with the playwright Still later, heairtbreaker Louise takes off for France alone to write about the war.

John and Louise reunite on the way to Petrograd, and both write dispatches about the Bolshevik revolution. After the war there are more partings, more reunions. John's disenchantment with the American Socialists and his attempt to organize the Communist Labor Party lead him back to Russia and to jail in Finland before their final, tragic reunion in Russia. 1 No doubt about it the lovers were a legend in their own time. But to precisely what degree, and in whose eyes? Here the movies uses an inspired and charming device, intercutting with the dramatic action the comments and recollections of 32 Witnesses, so called not actors, but real people who were around when Reed and Bryant were around; men and women who knew the couple or participated in the same events and movements they did, and who are still alive or were alive during the making of the film, and available to Beatty's camera.

The 68-year-old Minneapolis painter, who died Wednesday of a heart ailment was an artist and a trout fisherman not necessarily in that order, as he often pointed out. The long-time faculty member of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design will be buried today, and area artists say that he is leaving a rich legacy of Minnesota paintings, murals and watercolors. Quick also founded the Grand Mar-ais Art Colony, an outdoor art school that attracted about 150 people each summer, many of them from other parts of the nation and the world.

Born in Proctor, he became an instructor at what was then the Minneapolis School of Art after he got out of the army in 1946. The Grand Marais school opened a year later. "Actually, I started the school so I could go trout fishing," Quick said during a recent interview. "On many occasions I have dropped my brush and taken up my rod to catch a rising trout so it wouldn't continue to make me nervous while trying to finish a watercolor." His art Is a part of many public and private collections. Most recently his work was part of a special exhibition to open the Pillsbury Center.
