Monoxide-Space Trip Tie to Be Discussed park. 5' TELEVISION AND RADIO TODAY i and "Earp," CBS debuts its new "Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" comedy. Give it a try, too. It's possible some of you might decide to alternate your viewing. Comparative shopping is something TV needs.

It would cause all kinds of confusion among the rating services, who I suspect must operate on the premise that most of us viewers watch the same programs each week. Weekly dial switching might also save viewers from becoming jaded along about the middle of February. Sponsors and networks are spending a hefty hunk of I dough this season to bring Us more new programming. Approximately 40 weekly shows will be presented be-j sides a flock of so-called "specials." If the majority of 'viewers by-pass these new things for the old "reliables," then the same names and titles will appear in the "top i 10" and the networks can tell the critics to drop dead. THERE IS no assurance, 1 of course, that the new shows i will be any better, or as good, as the old stuff.

If this happens, the networks and spon-jsors deserve to get kicked in their conservative teeth. But I viewers should take a look at the new wares before mak- ing their decisions. I About now I can near "Oh, iYeah?" yowls from parents who will maintain that to turn off "Wyatt Earp" in their house would be tantamount to risking domestic civil war. It's true that the kids rule the TV viewing in many households, and many parents go along for the ride. I think it's time that Pa and Ma asserted themselves that is, if they care about watching TV at all.

KIDS shouldn't be allowed to deaden their mental processes by watching two or three westerns on TV every night, or anything else for that matter. If we don't begin getting them off the stuff soon, the Russians will take us over by default in another generation. We spend hundreds of dollars getting Junior's teeth straightened, inoculating him against the various viruses and clothing him in the proper style. Then we let him mesmerize himself in front of I TV where he generally is told the best way to get ahead in this world is to draw first and shoot fast. Throw the kids out of the living room two or three times a week, and see what you can find on TV to enjoy.

Out of the welter of programs to be poured at us this fall, there are bound to be good things. When it gets too bleak, sit down and write letters to the networks and tell them you've had it. The network chiefs keep telling us there is something on the gadget for everybody. Make them prove it! TELEVISION 9:00 A.M. Address by State Secretary Herter.
