It was the chunky left hander's 11th straight victory over almost entirely overlooked in the All-America selections last fall but, when he appeared on the same field with many of them in the College All-Star game in Chicago, he was elected the most valuable player. 1 Tomorrow's rivals present much particularly interesting new talent, some with big college reputations, some without. Little known in the north as a collegian was Buford Long of Florida, playing right half for the Giants. His early showing, including the 90-yard touchdown run from kickoff in the Green Giant Bowl game Tuesday, has convinced Coach Steve Owen he has found a good one. Increasingly intensive and smartly directed scouting by the professional teams has developed new veins of talent from small colleges which would have been wholly overlooked only a few years ago.

The golf Waryan has been shooting this year also points to that fact. However, the blond-haired, 28-year-old Midland Hills and Gross swinger is afraid it may not be. "It's hard to tell about the State Amateur," says Waryan, who has been winning and coming close in tournaments since 1942 when he won the Star Junior crown. "That Amateur is rugged. It's a grind.

You have to be on top of your game for an entire week and that's tough." Just the same, Waryan is going to be one of the prime favorites when the Amateur is held next week at Minneapolis Golf club. Last year he finished second best to Bill Zieske. Monday he was the only golfer to break par out of 295 in the state who shot for berths in the Amateur. He had a three-under 68 at Gross. "I haven't played Minneapolis since the National Amateur, whenever that was," said Waryan.

When informed Cyrus' Northrop, Owatonna was defeated Thursday in third round play in the Na was it that long ago? I remember it's tough." Last year Waryan won six matches in gaining the Amateur finals and the previous year he won four. In 1950 and 1949 he won three each and in 1948 he won two. So, he's getting better every year. "I feel I'm playing my best golf this year," Bill explains. "Now and then I have that bad round.

It just fizzles me. It only takes one of those in the Amateur and you're out." This year Waryan was the low amateur in the St. Paul Open after starting with 69-68 rounds, finished in a tie for second in the State Open after a 67 start at Woodhill, and ended second in the Twin Cities Amateur by two strokes. In 1949 Waryan captured the Open crown and then tied for second in 1951 at Inter-Jachen. In 1952 he took the Twin Cities Amateur.

So, the Waryan boy has been hot. He just hopes he's sizzling for six days at'MGC next week. Qualifiers will have a chance to try out MGC for size today in a practice round. A pro-amateur will be held Sunday. Tee times between noon and 2 p.m.
